Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft have become a common way to get around Marietta, Georgia, and the greater Atlanta area. However, not everyone with a car and a smartphone can become a rideshare driver. Uber and Lyft impose requirements on both drivers and their vehicles, while Georgia law adds rules governing rideshare services.
What Are the Driver Requirements for Uber and Lyft in Georgia?
Uber and Lyft establish their own eligibility standards in addition to requirements imposed by Georgia law. Because platform policies can change, prospective drivers should confirm the current requirements directly with the company before applying.
Uber currently requires new U.S. drivers to be at least 23 years old. Drivers must also have at least one year of licensed U.S. driving experience, or three years if they are younger than 25. Uber applicants must have a valid driver’s license and complete a screening that reviews their driving record and criminal history.
Lyft currently requires Georgia drivers to be at least 25 years old. They must have a valid driver’s license and pass a screening that reviews their driving history and criminal background.
Georgia law also regulates rideshare drivers. Under O.C.G.A. § 40-1-193, rideshare companies must ensure their drivers have a current for-hire license endorsement or a qualifying private background check certification. State law also requires rideshare companies to maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding drug or alcohol use while drivers are on duty.
What Are the Vehicle Requirements for Uber?
Uber requires drivers to use an eligible four-door vehicle. Its general U.S. vehicle requirements state that a car ordinarily must be no more than 15 years old, although eligibility can vary by location and ride type.
For UberX, vehicles generally must also:
- Have four independently opening passenger doors
- Have at least five factory-installed seats and seat belts
- Have working windows and air conditioning
- Be in good condition without cosmetic damage
- Have no commercial branding
- Not have a salvage or rebuilt title
Drivers using their own cars must also provide proof of insurance and vehicle registration. Uber advises drivers to check the specific requirements for their city because local standards and eligible vehicle lists can differ.
A vehicle that qualifies for UberX may not necessarily qualify for services such as Uber Black or Uber Comfort, which have additional vehicle and driver requirements.
What Are the Vehicle Requirements for Lyft?
Lyft also has specific requirements for vehicles operating in Georgia. Its current Georgia standards generally require vehicles to be 16 years old or newer, though regional requirements can vary.
Lyft vehicles must generally have:
- Four doors
- Five to eight seatbelts, including the driver’s
- Current vehicle registration
- Personal vehicle insurance
- An acceptable vehicle title
Lyft does not accept vehicles titled as salvage, non-repairable, rebuilt, or an equivalent classification. Taxis and stretch limousines are also excluded from the standard Lyft platform.
Drivers should check Lyft’s current Georgia requirements before applying because vehicle age and other eligibility standards may change.
Does Georgia Require Rideshare Vehicle Inspections?
Georgia’s rideshare statute specifically states that vehicle inspections are not required for vehicles used by rideshare drivers. That does not eliminate other legal or platform requirements that apply to a driver’s vehicle.
Georgia also requires rideshare drivers to maintain digital identification on their smartphones while active on a rideshare network. That identification includes the driver’s name and photograph, the vehicle’s make and model, its license plate number, and insurance information.
These records can help establish whether the driver and vehicle operating through a rideshare platform match the information registered with the service.
